How to Kill a City: Housing Crisis and Comics
Friday, May 23, 2025
2:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Espace La Presse – C21 – Section C
In Montreal and other cities across Canada and the world, there is a palpable housing crisis, with the notion of cheap rents quickly becoming a seeming oxymoron. How are gentrification, housing scarcity, and the changing face of urban life affecting comic book creators? From the increasingly difficult search for affordable living and working space to the varied ways that artists respond to changing conditions in the city and seek to build communities, the housing crisis and the increasing cost of living has touched almost every element of the working lives of comic book creators. Rick Trembles (Gesticulating Gentrification), Shaghayegh Moazzami (Les coquelicots de Ridgewood), and Eleanor Hannon (Citymouse), who have all tackled the housing crisis in their work, discuss this deeply of-the-moment topic.

It’s The End of the World (and I Feel Fine): New Visions of the Apocalypse
Friday, May 23, 2025
5:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Espace La Presse – C21 – Section C
The end is nigh! At a moment when climate change, economic chaos, political upheavals, and global epidemics increasingly dominate the news, it can feel like the world is truly on a knife’s edge. And yet even in the face of these very real threats, fictional apocalypses hold an ever-increasing attraction for us. From ecological collapse to violent conflicts, graphic novels provide a dark window into the looming destruction of our society. Why are creators compelled to show us dark visions of the end times, and why can’t we look away? Do these terrifying scenarios also inevitably hold the seeds of a brave new world? This provocative discussion with the creators Helge Reumann (Kilmotor), Jenna Cha (The Sickness), and Sofia Alarcon (Endsickness) will explore the strange beauty of the end of days.

Looking Back, Moving Forward: Coming-of-Age in Comics
Sunday, May 25, 2025
11:00 am to 12:00 pm
Espace La Presse – C21 – Section C
The transition from child to adult can be a treacherous time in our lives: bodies change in unexpected ways, friendships shift and break, and the struggle to discover oneself is anything but straightforward. But these always confusing, sometimes frightening, and often cringe-worthy years are absolutely foundational, setting the stage for our adult lives. Is it any wonder that cartoonists have so often sought inspiration in the ups and downs of adolescence? Cassandra Calin (The New Girl), Ned Wenlock (Tsunami), and D. Boyd (Denniveniquity) get together to explore memory and creativity in this resonant and relatable discussion.
