Book Launch: Degrees of Separation

Loading Events

On the evening of April 5, 2024, celebrated illustrator and graphic novelist Alison McCreesh will celebrate life in the North with the launch of a new graphic novel and art show. The event will take place at the Yellowknife Visitor Centre in the Centre Square Mall from 5:00-8.00 p.m.

Over the course of a decade, McCreesh lived, worked, and travelled north of the 60th parallel. Through a combination of autobiographical stories, drawings and sketches, McCreesh’s latest graphic novel, Degrees of Separation: A Decade North of 60, offers an intimate and understated glimpse of the North as Alison experienced it. From frigid days spent killing time while stranded in the High Arctic, to the challenges of raising a baby in a small shack with no running water, it is one young woman’s personal experience of both passing through and of setting down roots.

The graphic novel will be launched at the opening of (dis)continuous: a decade north of 60, an art show featuring work by McCreesh and curated by Sarah Swan. Swan says, “As part of this show, Alison has freed the drawings from the panels in her latest graphic novel, and freed them from their narrative context, giving them new life off the page. Viewer’s eyes can drift around the various northern locations, creating their own semblances of stories.”

The event will include a presentation and a signing opportunity. Books will be available for purchase, as well as limited edition art prints. Art prints are available by donation, as a fundraiser for The Yellowknife Women’s Society.
